Britney Tokumoto

Britney Tokumoto is originally from Honolulu, Hawaii and trained at Mid Pacific School of the Arts in Honolulu. She received her BFA in Dance from Marymount Manhattan College in 2012. Britney has collaborated with Adele Myers and Dancers, Bare Dance Company, Colectivo Dos Zeta, Denisa Musilova, Ivonne Batanero, Rosie Herrera Dance Theatre, Roxana Barba, Sandra Portal Andreu, Schoen Movement Company, Steps Ensemble, and Tami Stronach.

My artistic practice has been mostly as a dancer/collaborator with different choreographers and friends. I am really grateful for being introduced to Ensemble Thinking in my final year of college (Margaret Paek as my teacher). Most of the collaborators that I work with often come into the studio and begin their research through improvisation. Without ET, I honestly would not be the dancer/human that I am today. If anyone ever asks, did you choreograph that or improvise it (questioning the value between the two)? I say, both 😉

For better or for worse, I am mostly interested in the duration of desire between myself and the group. Especially when it comes to giving and taking focus. In ensemble work I often feel vulnerable and question my capacity for not knowing, but I also then get to a place of asking better questions like, How long can I not know? How long can I notice? Can I not know? Can I notice? Can I invite being seen and support by being still? Do I have to do this? I did this 5 times already…kill the choreographer. Whatever questions come up for me, in ET I feel my full presence and rigor in being.
